1 General Competition Rules And Information

 

  • The rules of golf apply at all times
  • The competition sub-committee has the power to impose sanctions or penalties against any player / member who disregards the rules of golf or these competitions rules.
  • In any dispute the committees’ decision is final. Normal competition times:
  • Men: between 07.00 and 16.00 on Saturday or Sundays (depending on time of year e.g. bad light etc)
  • Primrose Bowl Competition: Between 09.00 and 17.00 during the week (depending on time of year e.g.
  • bad light etc.)
  • Ladies: between 12.00 and 14.00 on Sunday
  • Juniors: between 14.00 and 15.00 on Sunday
  • Entry to Competitions will commence in the clubhouse at 18.30 on a Friday, one week prior to the competition. (With the exception of certain competitions e.g. Invitation day, Captains day or Presidents day when the entry sheets will be available on the Friday 2 weeks prior to the competition date). Primrose Bowl entry will be available up to 2 weeks prior to the competition date and will open on a Thursday.
  • Entry booking will be under the supervision of a member of committee until 19.30 and members may enter a maximum of two names (i.e. their own and one other), unless otherwise advised.
  • Playing members of staff, members of the committee and past Captains may enter their own name prior to the Friday entry.
  • If members have been away representing the club, county or country in official golfing events they may, at the discretion of the Captain, be allowed to join the competition on that day.
  • No member is allowed to move his name from one zone to another zone after the Initial Draw has been made at 18 00 on Thursday.
  • A member can remove his name, or add his name if not already booked, up to 18 00 on Friday when the Start Sheet is closed and published.
  • A member may enter a competition on the day of a competition by confirming that a slot is available with at least one playing partner and signing in via one of the PSI touch screens.
  • There is no longer a paper apology sheet, all booking activities will be via PSI touch screens or How Did I Do.
  • Primrose Bowl Competition – members can enter by selecting a vacant starting time on the PSI Touch Screen or How Did I Do up to and including the date of the competition.
  • A start time cannot be changed after the draw has been made on Tuesday.
  • Any member wishing to withdraw from a competition after the Initial Draw has been made, must do so via
  • PSI touch screen or How Did I Do until 18 00 on the night before the competition.
  • Failure to comply will result in suspension from the next singles competition.
  • Any member failing to make his starting time on the tee will receive an automatic suspension from the next singles competition.
  • Regular offenders of the competition rules, in the competition committee’s opinion may be subject to further penalties.
  • Members playing in a competition when serving a ban will incur a further ban of another singles competition suspension and are disqualified from the competition
  • All competitions are subject to change as circumstances may warrant.
  • Any competitor who fails to sign in via the PSI Touch Screen (or starting sheet when applicable) before starting play will be disqualified. His card will not be entered into the competition and will be deemed neither a score for the competition or for handicapping purposes, nor will he be eligible for the twos competition. ****Should a technical error occur preventing sign in players must advise the Club Professional which sections of the competition they are entering. They must also sign in before entering their score following completion of their round.****
  • Any competitor whose entry fee is not paid before starting (or does not advise the club Professional as above), will be disqualified. His card will not be entered into the competition and will be deemed neither a score for the competition or for handicapping purposes, nor will he eligible for the twos competition.
  • All cards must have the current handicap appended (either exact or playing) and signed by the competitor and the marker. Failure to comply with the above will result in disqualification.
  • All cards must be returned in competitions (including NRs) and entered into the computer in the lounge. Anyone who has a “no return” on a hole should continue to enter his scores on the following holes. Each competitor is responsible for his own card.
  • Any player who fails to return his scorecard in a competition and/or fails to enter the score in the computer on more than one occasion, will be asked to appear before the competitions sub-committee when sanctions may be applied.
  • Scores on scorecards must be legible and any cards that are re-written must have the original attached.
  • All players are requested to circle twos on their scorecards
  • With the exception of shotgun competitions, competitors must start at the 1st tee in all competitions.
  • All singles competitors should go out in 3’s where possible.
  • Only one junior player is allowed to play in each three ball.
  • In 4 ball or foursomes/greensomes competitions, a full or senior member must partner juniors.
  • Starting times will not be changed by competitors or delayed due to inclement weather
  • The competition committee may abandon or suspend a competition if weather conditions deem it
  • necessary.
  • Players cannot enter the sweep or twos without entering the competition and paying the entry fee.
  • Competitors after playing out the 1st hole and before driving off on the 2nd hole must allow competitors behind to play their approach shots to the 1st green.
  • The 18th hole is a “call on hole”. Players when on the green are requested to mark their ball, stand back and call on the players behind, they then play out the hole while the players behind walk to the green.
  • Major board competition play-offs are played within 28 days of the original date of the competition. The date will be decided by the players involved and the date of the play-off will be posted on the competition notice board and the board in the club house. If the play-off tie finishes in a tie, then the tied competitors shall play a further 18 holes at an arranged date. If the play off is not played within the 28 day timescale the competitions convenor will choose a new date and players must play the play off on this date.
  • Calcutta Cup, R H Jopling and D Moralee Cup matchplay Competitions.
  • If after 18 holes, during the knockout matches, the match is tied, a further three holes starting at hole 1 will be played on the basis that the winner is declared the one who wins the best of three holes. If after holes 1, 2 and 3, the match is still tied, a further three holes will be played starting at hole 4 and continue in numerical order as a best of three holes until a winner can be declared.
  • Resolution of ties in minor competitions will be decided by back 9, back 6, back 3, back 1. If a tie still occurs then the count back is taken over the front 9, front 6, front 3, front 1, until a result is established. Failing this, a further 18 holes will be played by the tied players to decide the result.
  • In the event of lightning or adverse weather conditions making the course unplayable, a klaxon will be sounded with one prolonged distinct blast. Players must mark their ball and leave the course. Play will be resumed once the danger has passed or conditions improve and the klaxon will be sounded with two short distinct blasts to restart play. It may be necessary to abandon the competition, this will be decided by the committee taking into account the weather forecast, the remaining period of light, the numbers of players completed and the state of the course, this will be signified with three distinctive blasts.
  • All players who enter a 36-hole competition are required to play both rounds and any player who fails to play in both rounds will be suspended from the next singles competition (club championship – see specific rules).
  • When a competition in progress is cancelled all monies will be refunded. A record of all fee paying players in cancelled competitions will be kept.
  • If a Calcutta or R H Jopling match has to be abandoned due to adverse weather, play will continue on the tee of the hole in play at the time of the abandonment and with the score at that time, when the match is rearranged
  • Any player in qualifying competitions away from Heworth golf club will be responsible for informing the competitions convenor of any score that will affect his handicap. Away scores should be returned within 7 days for chronological handicapping record maintenance. Failure to do so could lead to a suspension of his handicap.
  • The use of buggies is allowed in competitions except when the competition format is stated as a “walking competition”
  • Only those members who have shared ownership of one buggy will be allowed, if requested, to play together in a Men’s competition if drawn in the same zone. Extraordinary circumstances may be further considered by the Committee.
  • Entry to Captains Day, Presidents Day, Invitation Day and Heworth Open will be restricted to members who have submitted a minimum of three medal and / or stableford cards before the specified event.
  • Only bone fide members of golf clubs with official active handicaps can enter the club open competitions.
  • The Competitions Sub-Committee will make final decisions on all matters related to the Competition Rules as shown in this document.
