1. GENERAL COMPETITION RULES and INFORMATION
NOTE:
THE RULES OF GOLF APPLY AT ALL TIMES
1.1 The
competition sub-committee has the power to impose
sanctions or penalties against any player / member who
disregards the rules of golf or these competitions rules.
1.2 In any
dispute the committee’s decision is final.
1.3 NORMAL
COMPETITION TIMES:

Between 7.00am & 5.00pm on Saturday or Sundays (Depending on
time of year e.g., bad light etc.) |

Between 12noon & 2.00pm on Sundays

JUNIORS:

Between 2.00pm & 3.00pm on Sundays |
1.4 The
competition entry sheet will be in the clubhouse at 7.30pm
on a Friday (one week prior to the competition with the
exception of certain competitions i.e. Invitation Day,
Captains Day where it may be earlier)
1.5 It will
be under the supervision of a member of committee until
8.30pm and members may enter a maximum of two names.
1.6 Playing
members of Staff and Members of the committee may enter a
maximum of two names prior to the Friday entry.
1.7 If
members have been away representing the club, county or
country in official golfing events they may at the
discretion of the Captain be allowed to join the
competition on that day.
1.8 No
member is allowed to add his name to the competition start
sheet after the draw has been made on a Wednesday.
1.9 You can
however get a start time up to and including the day of
the competition by:
1.9.1 Adding his name to a 1 or 2 ball already on the
start sheet by using the TIME VACANT column on the apology
sheet.
1.9.2 Taking a time from the apology sheet of a player
that cannot play.
1.9.3 Once a time has been taken on the apology sheet
you are not allowed to change times
1.10 A
start time cannot be changed after the draw has been made
on a Wednesday.
1.11 Any
member wishing to withdraw from the competition after the
draw has been made, must use the apology sheet before
9.30pm on the Friday prior to the competition. Failure to
comply will result in suspension from the next two
Saturday singles competitions.
1.12 Any
member failing to make his starting time on the tee will
receive an automatic suspension from the next two singles
competitions.
1.13
Regular offenders, of the above rules, in the competition
committee’s opinion may be subject to further penalties.
Members playing in a competition when serving a ban will
incur a further two weeks suspension.
1.14 The
apology sheet is for the use of competitors only.
1.15 All
competitions are subject to change as circumstances may
warrant.
1.16 Any
competitor who fails to sign the start sheet BEFORE
starting play will be disqualified.
1.17 Any
competitor whose entry fee is not paid before starting
will be disqualified.
1.18 All
cards must have the current handicap appended and signed
by the competitor and the marker. Failure to comply with
the above will result in disqualification.
1.19 All
cards must be returned in competitions (including N.R.’s)
and entered into the computer in the lounge. Note; Each
competitor is responsible for his own card.
1.20 Any
player who fails to return his scorecard in a competition
and or fails to enter the score in the computer will be
suspended from the next singles competition.
1.21 Scores
on scorecards must be legible and any cards that are
re-written must have the original attached, amended scores
must be initialled by the marker
1.22 With
the exception of shotgun competitions competitors must
start at the 1st tee in all competitions.
1.23 All
singles competitors must go out in 3’s where possible.
1.24 Only
one junior player is allowed to play in each three ball in
case a full / senior player drops out
1.25 In 4
ball or foursomes competitions, a full or senior member
must partner juniors.
1.26 In
competitions a 2 ball has no precedence unless the 2 or 3
ball in front loses a complete hole.
1.27
Starting times will not be changed by competitors or
delayed due to inclement weather
1.28 The
competition committee may abandon or suspend a competition
if weather conditions deem it necessary.
1.29
Players cannot enter the sweep or two’s without entering
the competition and paying the entry fee.
1.30
Competitors after playing out the first hole and before
driving off on the second must allow competitors behind to
play their approach shots to the first green.
1.31 The
18th hole is a “Call on Hole” Players when on the green
are requested to mark their ball, stand back and call on
the players behind, they then play out the hole while the
players behind walk to the green.
1.32 In the
event of a tie in a Major Competition a further 18 holes
will be played by arrangement of the players as soon as
possible, the committee may at its discretion nominate a
date and time for the play off.
1.33 All ties in minor competitions are decided on the
best nett score for the last 9 holes. If a tie still
occurs then the count back is taken over the last 12
holes, then 15, 6, 3, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 8, 7, 5, 4,2
and last hole until a result is established. Failing this,
a further 18 holes will be played to decide.
1.34 In the
event of lightening or adverse weather conditions making
the course unplayable, a claxon will be sounded with one
prolonged distinct blast, players must mark their ball and
leave the course, play will be resumed once the danger has
passed or conditions improve and the claxon will be
sounded with two short distinct blasts to restart play. It
may be necessary to abandon the competition, this will be
decided by the Committee taking into account the weather
forecast, the remaining period of light, the numbers of
players completed and the state of the course, this will
be signified with three distinctive blasts.
1.35 All
players who enter a 36 hole competition are required to
play both rounds and any player who fails to play in both
rounds will be suspended from the next 2 singles
competitions.
1.36 Major
Board Competition play off’s are played within 28 days of
the original date of the competition. The date will be
decided by the player’s involved and the date of the play
off will be posted on the competition notice board and the
board in the club house. If the play off is not played
within the 28 day timescale the competition’s Convenor
will choose a new date and players must play the play off
on this date.
1.37 When a
competition is cancelled no monies are to be refunded.
Entry fees will be carried over to the replay of the
competition. Only if players are unable to play on the
re-arranged date will monies be refunded.
1.38 Any
player in qualifying competitions away from Heworth Golf
Club will be responsible for informing the competitions
convenor of any score that will effect his handicap.
Failure to do so could lead to a suspension of his
handicap. (clause 13.7 congu)
1.39 The
use of buggies are allowed in competitions except when the
competition format is stated as a “walking competition”.
1.40 Entry
to Captains Day, Presidents day, Invitation Day and
Heworth Open will be restricted to members who have
submitted a minimum of three medal cards before the
specified event.
1.41 Only
boni fide members of golf clubs with official
handicaps can enter the club open competitions.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS
BA Stronge
Cup Major competition (nett) 18-hole strokeplay full
handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20
or less may play in this competition but must play with an
adult.
Byers Cup
Major competition (nett) 18 holes 4bbb par/bogey full
handicap to a maximum of 18 then ¾ allowance. Juniors with
a handicap of 20 or less may play in this competition but
must partner an adult.
Calcutta
Cup (Match play) Full handicap allowance maximum of 18. A
blind draw will be made for opponents and cut off dates
for the completion of each round will be posted on the
competition draw sheet. Any match not completed by the cut
off date both competitors will be disqualified. The
Competition Committee and finalists will agree a date of
final. No juniors.
Captains
Trophy Major Competition Format to be decided by the
Captain.
Coronation
Cup Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play bogey
full handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap
of 20 or less may play in this competition but must play
with an adult.
Club
Championship Major Competition (gross) 36 hole stroke play
aggregate over two days off scratch, the best 42 gross
scores and ties after round one, play on day two in a
designated slot, which will be seeded according to gross
scores (lowest scores last). All other entries will play
day two competing to champion their own category. Juniors
with a handicap of 20 or less can play in this competition
but must play with an adult.
In the event of a tie after 36 holes a further five
holes 1, 2, 3, 17 & 18 will be played to determine Club
Championship.
In the event that scores are still tied after additional
five holes, sudden death will be played on holes 1,2, 3,
17 & 18 until a winner declared.
Hannay Cup Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play
full handicap to a max 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20
or less can play in this competition but must play with an
adult.
Calix
Majorum Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full
handicap to a maximum of 18. Entrants must be 50 years and
over on closing date for entries (Wednesday before comp).
Entrants must indicate Over 50 on the card.
Fenwick
Green Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full
handicap to a max 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20 or
less can play in this competition but must play with an
adult.
Innes Hopkins Major competition (nett) 18 hole stroke
play full handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a
handicap of 20 or less can play in this competition but
must play with an adult.
J P Burns
Cup Major competition (nett) 36-hole stroke play aggregate
(nett) over two days, full handicap to a maximum 18, same
handicap applies in both rounds. Juniors with a handicap
of 20 or less can play in this competition but must play
with an adult.
Jarrow &
Hebburn Major competition (nett) 36-hole stroke play
aggregate (nett) over two days, full handicap to a maximum
18, same handicap applies in both rounds. Juniors with a
handicap of 20 or less can play in this competition but
must play with an adult..
Jubilee Cup
Major competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full handicap
to a maximum 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20 or less can
play in this competition but must play with an adult.
Monthly
Medals Minor Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full
handicap to a maximum of 28. First 12 nett scores and ties
will qualify for the Silver Medal.
One of the monthly medals will be designated the Gold
Medal, the winner of which will qualify for a county
competition. Juniors with a handicap of 28 or less may
enter but must play with an adult.
Moses
Trophy Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full
handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20
or less may enter this competition but must play with an
adult.
Presidents
Salver Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full
handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors at the discretion of
the President.
Scott
Charlton Bowl Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play
full handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap
of 20 or less may enter this competition but must play
with an adult.
Spes Ultima
Major Competition (nett) 18 hole stroke play full handicap
to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap of 20 or less
may enter this competition but must play with an adult.
Jack
Stevenson Cup Major Competition (nett) 18 hole Stableford
stroke play full handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with
a handicap of 20 or less may enter this competition but
must play with an adult.
Silver
Medal Minor Competition (Nett) 18 hole strokeplay full
handicap to a maximum of 28. Restricted to first 12 nett
scores and ties from each monthly medal.
Walters
Trophies Major Competition (Nett) 18 hole foursome’s
strokeplay with a maximum handicap of 18 and then an
allowance of ½ the combined handicaps (½ strokes count).
Juniors with a handicap of 20 or less may enter this
competition but must partner an adult.
R H Jopling
Trophies (Qualifier) Minor Competition (nett) 18 hole 4
BBB strokeplay. First 31 pairs (nett) and past years
winners qualify to play in match play competition.
Allowance full handicap to a maximum of 20 then ¾
allowance for the qualifier stage. No juniors.
R H
Jopling Trophies (Match play) A blind draw for matches
will be made from the first 31 pairs (nett) from the
qualifying stages and the past years winners. Handicap
allowance maximum of 18 then ¾ allowance from the lowest
handicap
Cut off dates for completion of each round will be
posted on the competition draw sheet.
If a match is not completed by the cut off date both
pairs of competitors will be disqualified.
All rounds to be played off current handicap and ¾
difference.
Time and date of the final to be arranged by the
Competition Committee and finalists. No juniors.
Sweep stake monies go to the winners of the competition
not the qualifiers.
Usher Cup
Minor Competition (nett) 18 hole strokeplay with a maximum
handicap of 28. Juniors with a handicap of 28 or less may
enter this competition but must play with an adult.
Millennium
Trophy Major Competition (nett). Shotgun start 18 hole
greensomes. Maximum handicap of 18 and an allowance of 0.6
of the low handicap player plus 0.4 of the higher handicap
player. Decimal point strokes count. Juniors with a
handicap of 20 or less may enter this competition but must
partner an adult.
Invitation
Days Minor Competition (nett) 18 hole 4BBB Stableford with
a maximum handicap of 18 and then a ¾ allowance per
player. Invited guests must be members of a bona fide golf
club and winners will be asked to produce a handicap
certificate. No juniors.
John Devine
Trophy Minor Competition, (gross) Strokeplay, the player
in the prevailing season who during a qualifying
competition scores the lowest gross score. Ties will be
decided as per 1.34, ie back 9 etc
David
Moralee Cup Major Competition, singles scratch matchplay,
eligible to all golfers but must play off scratch.
Captains Fund Stableford strokeplay or 4BBB stableford
full handicap to a maximum of 18. Juniors with a handicap
of 20 or less may enter these competitions but must play
with an adult partner.
3.
HANDICAPS
Note; All
competitors should study and understand the rules of golf
before applying for a handicap or taking part in any
competition
3.1 Members
who do not play in at least three singles medal rounds
during a season may be at risk of losing their handicap
3.2 Any
breach of handicap rules can result in:
3.2.1 Loss of handicap
3.2.2 Disqualification
3.2.3 Exclusion from competitions
3.2.4 Suspension of their handicap
3.3 A new
member must have an official club handicap to play
competitions
3.4 New
Handicaps are obtained as follows
3.4.1 Where a new member has been a member of a golf
club a handicap certificate from their previous club must
be shown.
3.4.2 New
members need to produce three cards by playing 3 rounds of
golf, failure to comply will result in disciplinary action
against the player and marker.
3.4.3 A
member (marker) with a current handicap must sign all
cards.
3.4.4 The
marker must PRINT his name as well as signing.
3.4.5 Cards
must be handed in to the competition box and marked “For
Handicap Purposes”; the box is situated under the
competition computer located in the bar.
3.4.6 The
allocated new handicap will be displayed in the
competition cabinet or in the main alphabetical handicap
sheets located in the men’s locker room.
3.5 Members
who choose another club as their home club must ensure
they inform the club of any changes to their playing
handicap before they play in club competitions.
3.6 All
qualifying scores in away competitions must be reported to
home club and cards and returns supplied to ensure
handicaps are current.
3.7 Members
returning scores below SSS in away competitions must
adjust their own handicaps when necessary if a member of
the Competition Committee is not available.
3.8 General
Play adjustments under CONGU Rule 19 will be applied as
and when required and the Competition Committee’s decision
is final.
3.9
Handicap certificates for away competitions should be
requested in good time, which will be provided by the
Competition Committee.
3.10 For

Competition Convenor.
4.
PRIZES and SWEEPS
4.1 All
trophies and medals will be presented on presentation
night at approximately 7.30pm and all winners are expected
to attend.
4.2 Prizes
and sweepstakes should be collected from the
Professional’s shop within 8 weeks after the results are
declared or the prizes and sweepstakes will be entered
into the professionals book.
4.3 All
players must pay the competition entry fee prior to
playing
4.4 Juniors
are not allowed to enter the competition sweep; they may
enter the 2’s competition.
4.5 In all
competitions, 2s should be circled to assist Competitions
Committee; no other scores should be circled on the
scorecard.
4.6 A Hole
in One prize is included in all competitions entry money
for which a Hole in One tie and £30.00 will be awarded.
4.7 Prizes
for nett competitions will be allocated as follows:
1st nett Trophy and 1st Sweep
2nd nett £15.00 voucher and 2nd Sweep
3rd nett £10.00 voucher and 3rd Sweep
Best Gross £10.00 voucher
4.8 Prizes
for gross competitions will be allocated as follows
1st gross Trophy and 1st Sweep
2nd gross £15.00 voucher and 2nd Sweep
3rd gross £10.00 voucher and 3rd Sweep
Best nett Prize £10.00 voucher
4.9
Sweepstakes are divided as follows
Winner 50%
Second 30%
Third 20%
4.10 Sweeps
are decided and awarded on the basis of rule 1.33, i.e.
Back 9 etc
4.11
Players may not win more than one prize in any
competition, i.e. best net and best gross
4.12 Two’s
sweep is paid even when a player has NR’d and been
disqualified from the competition provided the scorecard
is correctly signed.
4.13 Any
visitor winning prizes in the Open Day or Invitation Days
MUST produce a bona fide current handicap certificate if
requested.
4.14 Entry
