About The Heworth Golf Club

Northumberland and Durham are well known for the variety of Golf courses in the British Isles.

The Heworth Golf Club  was opened in June 1912 originally as a nine hole course and expanded into  eighteen holes in 1976.  The badge plays a distinctive part in the clubs history  with the design being inspired by the ‘Old Castle’ and the ‘Gangling Gate’.  Details of these can be found in the ‘Club History’ section.

The course has been described by some as a ‘flat’ course but its Par 71  demands  a great deal of respect especially with the introduction of many thousands of trees which have now ‘come into play’ ensuring that thought and precision from  tee to green are of paramount importance.  The Heworth Golf Club however offers a fair and affordable test for golfers of all ages and abilities and visitors fees can be compared favourably with other courses in the area along with excellent catering facilities. The Club also offers the services of two Class ‘A’ Professionals providing lessons and an excellent well stocked shop with competitive prices.

The course provides a variety of ‘challenges’ especially when ‘good scores’ are being developed with the Par 5 dog-leg ninth hole with out of bounds alongside its right hand side. Then comes the testing Par 4 tenth hole some 442 yards from the back tees and the Par 5 eleventh hole 562 yards long with the B1288 running alongside and out of bounds. Once these holes have been negotiated, you arrive at Stroke Index 1, the 444 yard Par 4 ‘Airport Hole’ and finally at the end of ‘Amen Corner’, the 504 yards Par 5 ‘Palmers Hall’. Hopefully, you will have ‘survived’  and you can then look forward to completing an excellent round with  the final ‘signature’ hole, the  228 yard Par 3 eighteenth.

You are now within sight of the 19th Hole where excellent bar and catering facilities are available and our Members and staff are keen to make your visit to Heworth, one to remember.

The Heworth Golf Club is a very popular course for visiting parties, many who return every year.  Visitors have noted how the course has developed during the last ten years with the introduction of many new features. The club is always keen to hear the views of our guests.
