HISTORY OF THE VETS SECTION
In the early 1980's the then President of Heworth Golf Club, Mr Danny Cassidy, organised 2 golf sweeps each week, on Tuesday and Thursday, amongst some of the older members of the club who turned up to play a few holes. The Course Ranger at the time, George McGovern, was a former speedway rider and he donated a cup which he had won, to be played for among the veterans on an annual basis. This was to be the forerunner of a group who grew from 20 keen players to the present day membership of around 150. The Veterans section now compete for 10 trophies each year as well as playing regular home and away team fixtures with 11 neighbouring Veterans sections. They organise their own social events and support local charities.
The Vets Society is open to all Club members aged 55+. Please contact the Vets Secretary, Tom McCallion, if you are interested in joining.
