Presentation night for 2014 was held on Saturday November 8th. This year there has been a tremendous ammount of effort put in to encourage more juniors to play golf by both Bryan Ross and the junior JLO. This year the presentation included the junior section for the first time. This was so successful. Certificates were given out to the juniors who had participated and they were so proud. Please see the photos in the gallery section of the web site. We had a very special presentation this year because we had a new trophy, the Auriel Newburn Memorial trophy. This was to honour the work done over the 16 years as secretary by Mrs Auriel Newburn who sadly passed away earlier this year after a long illness suffering Parkinsons Disease. We invited her daughter and family to come along to make the presenation and were very happy to welcome her daughter Auriel, her husband, Auriel's grandson Sean, Auriel's sister and her husband. Auriel's husband Benny was not able to attend because he was in early stages of recovering from a hip operation. This presentation added a lovely touch to the evening because the trophy was won by a very worthy winner with a score below handicap, Mrs Debbie Gilbertson and the family were so appreciative of the honour given to Auriel and the welcome given to all of the family by the members of Heworth golf club. Please see photos below.
Contrary to the normal weather pattern for this time of year the sun came out and shone on the righteous on Sunday. A team of Heworth golf club's Community Volunteers (i.e. Heworth's ladies committee aided by Betty Lyons with her buggy and muscle in the form of George Chambers and Rob Halbert) took to the course armed with spades and forks to plant nearly 1000 daffodils to brighten up the start of the season next year. Thank you to Margaret Tindale and Maureen Flinn for their contibutions to the stock of daffodils the Ladies' Section purchased out of their limited funds. Not sure that anyone else noticed our efforts but perhaps when the flowers appear next year we will be congratulated on a good job done by our volunteers. See photos below.
An excellent away day was had by all when the Heworth Honey's made their way to Sharpley for their annual outting. Its was a gem of a course albeit with some very tricky greens.
The weather was far better than expected and it certainly paid off for our winner, Liz McKenzie with a stunning 38 points!!
Faye Sanderson who plays off handicap 1c won the Ladies Club Championship with 147gross over the two days. Runner up was Janet Ross who plays off handicap 5c with 155 gross over two days.
Faye also won the HandicapChampionship with 145 nett over two days over the back 18 holes from Janet Ross who also had 145 nett over two days.
The 2nd days play Sunday 13th was in doubt earlier in the day because of torrential rain which resulted in the Mens Championship being cancelled but the course was playable by lunchtime and the ladies braved the possibility of further downpours and went out. As it turned out the weather in the afternoon improved dramatically and the ladies played in fine conditions.
Janet Ross, Our Lady Captain for 2014 had a great day and provided some lovely touches to make the day a special one for all. Goody bags on the sign in desk, Bubbles and nibbles at the half way house with more goodies for the second half of the round. A very pretty prize table with some great prizes and an all round good day. Well done to all the winners and to everyone taking part.
Looking forward to the new season 2014 - Lady members at the pre season dinner in March.
